Quilting - The art of sewing layers of fabric or fibrefill together to make warm blankets or clothing or used for effect. Quilting "purist" and "traditionalist" quilt by hand. Machine quilting is the most common.
Things to consider before quilting:

Think about what you want to make. A bed quilt, a wall hanging, a lap quilt? If you are a beginner, you may want to start with a small project. A wall hanging or lap quilt are good beginner projects.

What type of fabric would you prefer? You would want to use a fabric that is durable and washable.

What type of shapes do you prefer? Angular, rounded, geometric or flowers?

Make sure that use understand the "quilting definitions" as well as the parts of a quilt. See Diagram below.

Backing - The bottom or back part of the quilt.
Batting - The inner lining between the top, or face of the quilt and the bottom layer, or backing. Batting gives the quilt its fullness and warmth.
Binding - The folded over backing or a long strip of bias fabric that finishes off the edge of the quilt.
Block - A square of pieced or appliqued patchwork that is put together with other blocks to form a quilt.
Border - A length of fabric that frames the outside edges of the quilt top.
Lattice - A strip of fabric that frames each block in a quilt. The lattice is sometimes called the sashing.
