sewing thread Sewing Thread Guide  sewing supplies

A good quality thread is important when sewing. Poor quality threads can result in frequent breaking due to the fact that they are often made of uneven fibers.  Today threads are much stronger due to the fact that they are often mixed with nylon, polyester, viscose and rayon.

Choosing a Thread:

Select a thread that is most compatible with the fiber content you have chosen.
For example...

 Suggested Thread  Fabric Type
100% cotton  Wool crepe needs a natural fiber
 Silk Thread  Silk
100% polyester or polyester-covered cotton   polyester voiles and fabrics with stretch
 Universal thread  All purpose sewing

The Inevitable Task of "Threading The Needle"

I know there are some out there that aren't quite sure how to thread a needle.  You would probably rather take that torn shirt or skirt to the tailor' s or trash it instead of going for it and trying to "thread that needle!"

Here are a few tips to help you master needle threading:

  • Find a relaxing spot with good lighting.
  • Choose your needle and the color of thread to be used.
  • Unravel the thread from the spool.  Usually around 18 inches will do. (if you use too long a thread, it has the tendency to tangle and knot).
  • Be sure to cut the thread with sharp scissors.  You want a clean cut.  Cutting at an angle may help.
  • You can wet the end of the thread that will be inserted into the hole of the needle with a little saliva.  (this gives the flimsy thread a little stiffness and strength, this is certainly optional).
  • Now the needle.  Leave the shorter end hanging a few inches.
  • Knot the longer strand at the end.
  • Begin sewing.
If you still had trouble, try using a Needle Threader.   sewingitall.com/needle threader

You did it!  Aren't you proud of yourself?  Just think of the money you saved by doing the repair yourself

TIP: To make your thread stronger, thread your needle and pull the strands to an equal length then tie the ends together. This comes in handy when sewing buttons on or need a stronger thread.

Site Dedication:  "I would like to dedicate this site to  my mother.  I remember watching her as a child in amazement at the creative things she would make.  I Always hoped that I would be as talented as she.  If it were not for her, I would have not had the interest in becoming involved in crafts or the drive to involve myself in things that allowed me a sense of pride and accomplishment.   Crafting has taught me patience and peace within myself.  What a wonderful feeling to create something with your own hands."    Love you mom -- V.
