What is Crochet?
Crochet is an old craft and is practiced all over the world. Not only have crochet stitches and designs been passed through generations but, the actual items like garments, bedspreads and household items have been passed down and held as dear memories of past family members.
Like knitting, crochet is formed from a continuous length of yarn, but only one stitch at time is made. Chunky hats, scarfs and sweaters can be made by using large hooks and yarns. If you want to make delicate lace, you can use thin hooks and yarn. Since crochet only requires a single hook and a ball of yarn, it allows the needlecraft to be extremely portable.
Every crochet pattern, no matter how complex, is constructed of the basic stitches such as: A foundation chain that consist of a chain stitch and a slip knot (the very first step of getting started). You will begin by crocheting a single chain of loops, each new loop being formed by catching the yarn and drawing it through the previous loop. The chain is made to the planned width of the finished piece, the yarn is turned at the end of the chain, and a second chain is crocheted, each new stitch being looped through a stitch in the previous row. Various basic stitches and a variety of textures and patterns can be created through the use of the single crochet, the double crochet, the half double crochet and the triple crochet. Be sure to read our crochet basics of this site to get an understanding of these elements before you begin.
History of Crochet:
The exact origin and date of crochet is controversial. Some believe it goes back to before the time of Christ however no record of this needlecraft before the 1800's. It was not until the 1840's that written instructions began to be published. Crochet began as a cottage industry in Ireland with a lace called Irish crochet or guipure lace. In the mid 1800's it became a large industry demand because of the need of the people to supplement their income due to the great potato famine of that time. Crochet is still a cottage industry in some countries such as India, Greece, Italy, and some Asian countries. I find it amazing that crochet is still popular today.
Various ways and spellings the crochet craft is searched for: Crochet, crocheting, crocheted, croshay, crocheter, crochets, croche, chrochet, corchet, crochte. I thought some of these were funny but, If you really think about it, the misspellings actually make since.
